I created "Breeds of Life" for my Honors Art lll class. It is 12"x18". The unit was on typography and learning how it is used and its importance in society. The requirement was to create your font and use it in a themed alphabet. Because this was one of our last projects for the year, I wanted to display my greatest skills. "Breeds of Life" showcases my dexterity because of the significant amount of movement achieved from the complexity of the form on all the horses. Their position, characteristics, shape, and immense values aided in the movement. Throughout the year and hugely on this assignment, I've come to realize how much dramatic hair can aid in showing movement. I took a huge risk by painting so significant value changes, to achieve the amount of form, value, texture, and emphasis. "Breeds of Life" is made from acrylic paint (the horses), and the letters were drawn from a black colored pencil and a black pen. I chose to do realism to truly capture the beauty and life within the horse breeds. "Breeds of Life" was also very successful in highlighting each little difference in the characteristics of each breed.

 

I work with acrylic paint more often than most. It has become one of my favorite media and something that I feel very comfortable with. I love to use new media and concepts because I truly believe that they can help express and further create what you want to capture in your art if you take big risks. Each letter corresponds with the first letter of a different horse breed. Most people would not have noticed all the differences and characteristics of each horse bread and how much they can differ. This little fact that most people don't realize is what is so special about this piece because you can truly notice all the little differences making each horse so extraordinary and unique. So much of my challenge came from this and that is why it is one of the most significant pieces I've made this year. This accomplishment was a huge step in my career.
